About Helmsley
The bustling market town of Helmsley is well known for it's rich history and is right on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors and Ryedale. The National Park Information Centre is based in the Town Hall, which is itself over 100 years old. The Centre provides leaflets and times for places of interest and local attractions, as well as information on walks and nature trails in the areas. Helmsley is well known for Duncombe Park, the ancestral home of Lord and Lady Feversham. Tourists flock there not only to see the beautifully restored 17th century Manor House, but also to marvel at the 35 acres of lancscaped gardens and the National Nature Reserve. The reserve is home to 450 acres of the oldest and tallest trees in the country, as well as discovery trails and orienteering courses for all ages. The impressive tower, keep and outbulidings of Helmsley Castle overlook the town, after being restored by English Heritage. The site boasts an information centre which is open daily, as well as displays and tournaments during the season.
As well as a rich history, the town also has a busy arts and crafts programme. Antique fairs are held weekly, attracting both tourists and local enthusiasts alike. There are also seasonal craft markets selling everything from bric-a-brac to original watercolours. The Old Meeting House hosts regular events including cinema, live music theatre and workshops.
Although the area surrounding Helmsley is steeped in agricultural history, tourism now forms the basis of the local economy. There are many excellent hotels in the area, including the renowned Black Swan - where 'Mr Bean' actor Rowan Atikinson once stayed, as well as cosy pubs and cafes selling both home-cooked traditional fare as well as award-winning international cuisine. However, tourists come back to Helmsley time and again to experience the friendly welcome from locals as well as the breathtaking landscapes that give a healthy respite from busy city life.
The Toyshop chose Helmsley as it's home because it encapsulates everything we are about, providing a relaxing yet stimulating experience for all ages - worlds away from stores which sell toys that promote violence and have forgotten what real toyshops should be about. We are sure you'll find a magical experience and friendly welcome in the Toyshop as well as in Helmsley that will keep you coming back time and again.
